10 Steps to Earthquake Preparedness Plan

Here is a checklist of the steps you can take now to prepare for a major earthquake:

1.Remove clutter from your exit paths, and keep shoes or boots under your bed. Pictures and artwork in the hallways and stairwells can easily fall in a major earthquake, causing glass and wood to shatter everywhere.

2.Keep a clear path between you and your designated meeting spot, and the areas in your home that you plan to seek shelter (for example, under a table). Having shoes on hand will protect your feet in your home and outside.

3.Choose a designated family meeting spot, inside and out. Choose a safe spot in your home such as under

heavy tables or desks, inside hallways, corners of rooms or archways (it's not recommended you stand in a doorway as the door itself could slam into you). Don't choose the kitchen: your cabinet contents may come crashing down. Outside of your home, choose an area away from poles, trees and rocks (if you live near a hillside).

4. If you have gas, find out where to turn it off. Keeping a wrench next to the tank is a good idea. If you smell gas and can't turn it off or don't know how, get out of the building as soon as possible. Keep your windows and doors open to air out the gas and don't light anything with a match or cigarette lighter.

5.Keep a fire extinguisher and other emergency supplies handy. You can put your own kit together, or you can purchase an assembled kit. Remember to keep your emergency and food supplies in secure, dry accessible spot. Keep a flashlight next to your bed (with your shoes). If an earthquake occurs at night and the electricity goes out, you will need it.

6.Secure your big-screen television and other top-heavy furniture. Whether you hang your TV on the wall, or keep it on a media cabinet, it's a good idea to make sure your TV is fastened to avoid falling. If possible, it's a good idea to secure your china cabinet, bookcases, or any other tall furniture prone to toppling.

7.Don't rely on electronics. Depending on the severity of the earthquake, you may not have electricity to use your computer, television, cordless phones or radio. Keep an old phone that does not require a power connection. Keep a battery-powered radio on hand with lots of batteries, as well as a set of charged walkie-talkies.

8.Depending on where you live, it's a good idea to keep up to two weeks worth of food and water for you and your family, and pets.

• Water - at least two liters of water per person per day. Include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order. Special items such as medications, infant formula and equipment for people with disabilities. While some emergency management organizations may suggest only up to three days, it really depends on how close you live to a major city center when disaster strikes, emergency efforts will likely be focused on areas that have sustained the most damage (think tall buildings, bridges, and major road arteries). The farther away you live from the city, the less likely emergency services will reach you first. Make sure your kit is easy to carry. Keep it in a backpack, duffel bag or suitcase with wheels, in an easy-to-reach, accessible place, such as your front hall closet. Make sure everyone in the household knows where the emergency kit is. Include extra keys to your car and house. Cash in smaller bills, such as bills and change for payphones. A copy of your emergency plan and contact information. A manual can opener. Food that won't spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (remember to replace the food once a year).

9.Keep bleach and water purification tablets in your emergency kit. Replace stored water at least once every six months.

10. ID your pets with microchips, tattoos or licenses, and make sure you keep them updated with your current information. Your pets will likely be traumatized and may run away.

Many financial institutions require earthquake insurance if you hold a mortgage with them. Check with your Insurance Agents who can offer advice on earthquake and other home insurance plans.

Above all, Be Prepared!
